What are the advantages of digital photography?

Film allows more room for error in terms of exposure, lighting, or processing damage. As far as photo quality, you can expect digital to look just as good as, or even better than film.
A digital photographer can produce several versions of the same image: soft, sharp, color, black and white, or with special effects and filters. You or your photographer can decide which looks best for each image.

Owning digital cameras that produce acceptable results has given many people the idea that anyone with a digital camera can photograph a wedding. However, digital photography is in many ways more technically involved as film. Results depend on the skill of the craftsmen as well as the quality of the tools.

What are the advantages of hiring a professional photographer?

A professional photographer will be timely - arriving at your event promptly, and getting the results to you on time. A professional has the proper equipment, including emergency back-up equipment, for photographing your wedding. Having attended many weddings, an experienced wedding photographer will be at ease at your wedding. A professional also uses a printing company that meets high professional standards of print quality.

What are the advantages of having an assistant photographer?

A professional photographer's assistant is used to working with individuals, couples, and groups to make the formal portraits go as smoothly and quickly as possible.
An assistant's responsibilities also include assisting with lighting and artistic tools, eliminating potential detractions from the scene, to maintain proper conditions so the photographer can focus on the shot.
Using two cameras can capture two different perspectives during the ceremony (example: Both bride and groom's facial expressions during the procession), and two different activities during the reception.

What is the average cost of wedding photography?

Prices range from $1600 to $4600, on up! Don't shop for a bargain, especially over the phone. Remember, these photographs preserve the memory of your wedding day! You want to ensure the quality of an experienced professional, so be prepared to spend a minimum of $1,500.
Most couples initially underestimate the cost of photography. Typically, the photography comprises 10-25% of the wedding budget. But the amount of photography time is really up to you. You can have the photography take pictures of you getting ready before the ceremony, and keep taking pictures until you leave the reception. Or you may just want a few hours of photography during the ceremony, with a few formal portrait shots. Standard coverage starts about two hours before the ceremony and ends after the bouquet/ garter-toss or cake-cutting.

What is the ideal balance between posed and candid shots?

This is a matter of personal preference, as well as time constraints. A more candid style of photojournalism can even be achieved with no formal portraits at all. Some couples want to focus mostly on the formal portraits, especially if it is a rare opportunity. Some may set aside up to three hours for formals, usually before the ceremony.
When planning with your photographer, draw up a list of "must have" formal shots. A pre-selected list helps reduce confusion and time involved on your wedding day.

Should formals be taken before or after the ceremony?

Taking all the formals before the ceremony has several advantages: Flowers, wardrobe and make-up are fresh. You can budget your time more concisely. If you take your formals immediately after the ceremony, guests have to wait before they can greet you, and subjects will have to pose for pictures rather than mingle at the reception.
However, some couples believe is bad luck to see each other before the ceremony. If you prefer to follow this tradition, photos of the bride and groom together can be done afterward, while individual shots can be taken before.

Is it reasonable to ask that guests refrain from taking personal pictures during formals?

Yes. If the photographer is trying to work quickly through a series of formal pictures, individual snap-shooters slow the process. Other problems can arise when there are several cameras aimed at the subject group. The subjects' attention will be diverted away from the professional's lens. Multiple flashes can interfere, ruining the pictures that you are paying for! Instead, we offer your own personal web gallery where guests can select and order professional-quality prints.
